Five Marketing Terms You Need To Know

If you’ve ever felt like marketing has its own language, you’re not wrong. Between acronyms and industry jargon, it can feel overwhelming. But here’s the thing, the right concepts can completely shift the way you show up online, and more importantly, how your audience responds.

Here are five essential marketing terms we believe every brand should understandand start using with intention.

1. CTA (Call To Action)

A CTA is exactly what it sounds like - a prompt that tells your audience what to do next. Think of your CTA as the bridge between attention and action. You’ve already stopped the scroll, now it’s time to guide your audience to the next step.

This could look like:

  • “Save this post for later”

  • “Tell us your favourite below”

  • “Send us a DM”

  • “Shop now”

Don’t assume your audience knows what to do. Tell them.

2. EDM (Electronic Direct Mail)

EDM is your direct line to your audience. Whether you’re launching a new product, sharing updates or driving traffic to your site, EDMs allow you to communicate more intentionally to your customers. It’s one of the few spaces where there are no algorithms or distractions, you decide who sees what

It’s personal, it’s direct, and when done well, it converts.

3. Content Pillar

Content pillars are the core themes that guide what you post. They keep everything cohesive, aligned and recognisable so your brand doesn’t feel all over the place.

Some common examples include education, behind the scenes, client results and brand storytelling.

When you know your pillars, content planning becomes clearer and more intentional.

4. Social Proof

Social proof is organic content that builds trust through real experiences. This is one of the most powerful tools in marketing because it’s not you talking about your brand, it’s others doing it for you.

Think reviews, testimonials, client results or user-generated content.

People trust people. When potential customers see real experiences, they’re far more likely to take action.

5. USP (Unique Selling Point)

Your USP is what sets you apart. It’s the reason someone chooses you over every other option out there. And in a saturated market, this is what matters most.

Your USP could be same-day turnaround, luxurious packaging, custom designs or a signature style that no one else offers.

If you can’t articulate what makes you different, your audience can’t either.

You don’t need to know every marketing term to build a strong brand. But understanding the right ones can make all the difference.

If you’re ready to move beyond just posting and start building a strategy that actually converts, I’m here to help.
